Baku

Below are some oil rigs out in the Caspian. At the beginning of the 1900's, Baku was supplying half the world's oil and helped make the fortunes of the Nobel brothers, endowing the Nobel prize. On the right a WW2 memorial for a general from Azerbaijan. It is said that one of Hitler's main objectives in attacking the USSR was to capture the Baku oilfields, which he did not do.
