the ruler on high sits
immeasurably constant,
constantly measuring
it's domesticated flock
sigh...it's no match for khayyam's moving finger, but the subject is the same.
exactly when i finally get completely adjusted to life, work, and people here in saitama, it's time to pack up and head somewhere else. but as i am often wont to say: "the only thing constant in life is change". and so it goes.
anyway, enough attempting to be introspective and erudite... i haven't written in a while because i have been rather busy with work, finishing up things for my final project and presentation. i leave japan on june 26, which is only six short weeks away. scratch that. nine short days away. scratch that, 7 days away. i was going to write a weekly steve, but there's just no time and too much to tell. my days are filled with going away parties with different people and groups and i have precious little time to pack and, oh yeah, write my final reports.
so, i guess i should make some announcements...
- my last day of work is this thursday, june 20, 2002. i will then be away from this email account. please feel free to keep in touch via: steve attomaku 68k dotto org stevieplayland attomaku yahoo dotto com
- after finding some time to pack, this weekend my dear friends are throwing me a final going away camping/climbing party at the best climbing spot in japan! (sniff...sniff...)
- after manically packing and throwing away tons of junk at the last second, hopefully i will make the plane to houston on june 26, 2002. unemployed bum orientation will ensue until
- august 26, 2002 when i will return to japan to travel and be a farmer. will be working in exchange for rice and roof on a farm in hokkaido picking vegetables and stuff until
- october 7, 2002 when i will return to the states for the the 2002 climbing tour which will be ten days (oct. 7-17 or maybe 20) of me showing some japanese guys and gals some great camping and climbing in california's joshua tree, bishop, and yosemite (anybody want to join, let me know!) ROAD TRIP!!!
- and finally, i will return home until i get kicked out and work at various odd jobs (climbing gym?,nail boutique?,computer store?,substitute teacher?) until january where i will enroll in the graduate program of blank at the university of blank and start the whole process of deciding what to do with my life all over again.
so there have been at least two good weekly stories laying around my harddrive but i don't have the time now to touch them up...so i will just put them on the web page for your leisurely perusal (www.localsteve.cc - now up and running, i.e.-no more embarrassing picture. and for anyone interested, not all of the past weeklies have been input yet, so i apologize if you just have some burning desire to read them.)

and here ends another chapter of my life. it was a year full of experiences, events, and things i will never forget. painful, strange, euphoric, fun.
- drunken karaoke my first night in town
- puke green pants and lighter puke green shirt, white gym shoes
- friggin annoying public announcements
- watching the world trade center towers crumble on nhk
- riding the ferris wheel at the top of a building in osaka
- eating udon on camping trips
- the infamous nipple licking
- super! companions
- the infamous shuffle run
- the guy with the poofy teased brown hair that looks like a toupee that i always laugh at at lunch
- the "phenomonal ass" that i sometimes see on lucky days walking to work...(yes, the "phenomonal ass" belongs to a woman)
- the guy who, everyday, somehow manages to parallel park his car in a brick enclosure literally 30 cm bigger than the car
- the beer vending machines
- the porn vending machines
- getting sick with the mumps
- going to a funeral
- helping a high school girl walk an old stumbling drunk home and having him offer me his driver's license in return
- getting dumped on my birthday (sorry, i had to throw that in)
- sleeping outside next to the bum at the train station
- business trips
- having a 3 year old boy rip out the hair from my little goutee (antonio!!!)
- onsens onsens onsens
- holding my friend's three month old beautiful baby girl and have her smile
- playing hangman in the clean room
- making a gun out of a pen and a dry nitrogen nozzle in clean room
- accidentally breaking things with said gun (teehee...)
- hoarse voice from hours of karaoke
- the drunken naked star spangled banner rendition
- trains, traffic jams, skinny streets
- mini skirts, boots, loose socks
- AND THE FOOD! - sushi, ramen, soba, tenpura, big fat katsu, curry, RICE!!!
sigh.....yes, it was a year. don't be alarmed by the lack of a descriptive adjective. it was a year. not a good year, a bad year, a nice year, or a long year. it was just a year. i can think of no adjective that can describe it (or any other year) any better than the saying it was simply a year.
and that is a beautiful thing. hope everyone enjoyed theirs.
tata.
