the swing of things (the beginnings of the weekly steve)

my shoes are extremely white. comfy white gym shoes to go with my puke green pants and lighter green top. at 8 this morning 1000 different ants changed into their puke green pants and lighter green top and scurried this way and that with quick determination. i'm now sitting at my desk, pushed up against the desks of nine of my japanese lab members. classic japanese company setting. a huge room with tons of well-filed documents on each wall, the middle filled with clumps of ten desks. one phone per four desks, everyone with a tiny laptop or computer. cute...
so yeah, today is my first day of work, i spent all morning talking 30 minutes each with some of the members of my group. just to get to know people and so they can get to know me. that will continue again in an hour. until then i'm free to 'fix' up my computer (i.e.-send email and surf the web). oh, the welcome party. ha. i forgot about that. my first day in hanno was spent running around town with my boss and my project manager. at 5:30 we met last year's intern for the nomikai, or drinking party. needless to say, everyone got toasty warm and red-cheeked, with my boss's boss repeatedly filling my sake glass full of the expensive, warm rice wine. since i barely had anything to eat for dinner except the little sticks of chicken and some cucumbers, i was pretty lit up. the party over, it was time for the necessary nijikai, or second party, which is almost always drunken karaoke. foxy lady became my first song of the year and i began drinking water.
anyway, if you haven't guessed or heard, i'm in japan. you can reach me at:
