Sveta and Sergey took us on a day trip to Novgorod, one of the oldest
cities in Russia. On this great trip we saw:
two Orthodox cathedrals from the early middle-ages
a museum of wooden architecture
another kremlin
reminders of the struggle between the Slavic and Tatar people for the land that is now Russia
reminders of the grinding struggle between Nazi Germany and the
Soviet Union: the tank below marks the furthest advance of the front towards Moscow
As added bonuses we saw what Russian highway driving is like (dangerous), how police make traffic stops (they stand in the road and flag you down), and we got to sample more Russian pancakes.
We visited a 9th century church and a monastery. The sites are
peaceful, but have seen their share of conflict. In WW2 the Nazis
captured the monastery. In the middle ages, a foreign duke was
retained to protect the city from frequent invaders. He lived outside
the city so he wouldn't be seen as ruling it.
