Profanity or vulgarity? Prayer and what else?

In my post on "Renee" and "Danny" yesterday, I used the F word. I've always though it was simply a vulgarity, but I noticed that another blogger called it a profanity. I consider vulgarities to be, well, vulgar - maybe a little uncomfortable and grating, but sometimes that's needed - whereas profanities, of course, should never be used as they profane the sacred.

The acts and intentions I described do profane something sacred, but is that word for them a profanity or a mere vulgarity?

And, of course, thanks to the bloggers who linked to the story and requested prayers for the kids. There are millions more of these kids out there, most in even worse situations. Pray, of course, and... what? Change the world one kid at a time is all we are up to at the moment since we have four of our own under the age of seven.

At times it's almost as if our apartment is a monastery among the barbarians, relatively speaking.

UPDATE Thanks, Nârwen! I've amended the original post to be less profane and more precise.

I used the word 'profanity' because it is used to describe an act which is, if in the proper context, sacred, and if not in the proper context, a profanation of what is sacred. I tend to reserve the term 'vulgarity' for crude words for other bodily functions which do not have this aspect.

Thank you! I'll amend the original post. I think I was stretching a bit to justify the use of a then-questionable word.

Bill: I'm glad you changed it. I think it was an important post. However, the word you are looking for may be *copulation* rather than *fornication*, since the latter activity requires the participants to be unmarried. Just a quibble.

(If you like, Donna and I would be happy to re-write your entire post for you. In the future please run your essays by one of us before posting. Thanks.)

I'm not convinced by Donna Marie's argument. I don't think the F word profanes anything; as Bill used it, I see it as a vulgar word for fornication.

So if Bill wants to be a potty mouth with all those young children of his ... well, there's always Heroic Moments.

Jeff - copulation was the very first thing I tried there - er, the first WORD I tried there - and I thought it lacked some nastiness that's well-expressed by f*ck. Hm - maybe I don't need to make the nastiness explicit; the whole damn situation is nasty enough.

Now in this specific situation with "Renee's" and "Danny's" parents (or whatever), fornication is the correct technical word. Copulation would certainly do in the general situation - the pastime of the anti-culture - and it does have a whiff of raunchiness to it.

I wish you were serious about the re-writing!

My wife has established a "Swearing Jar" to which I have to contribute a quarter every time one of our kids cusses.

I now do most common household repairs when no one else is home.

Dear Tom and Bill,

I have established a college sailor-mouth fund to which my wife must contribute everytime she let's loose with one of her highly florid and inventive locutions.

See, there are some advantages to having been brought up in a very strict fundamentalist protestant household. In my whole life I never heard my dad say anything more colorful than "Lordy." I have retained the habit. However, I will note that it is one of the few things that accrues as an advantage when bringing up children.

shalom,

Steven

Damn, Bill, you're getting a lot of comments on this post. I'm going to have to start using the f-word more frequently on my blog!
